India has recorded a decrease in crime rates in 2024, as per the latest figures from the National Crime Records Bureau. The number of crimes reported dropped to 58.85 lakh, a 6% dip from the previous year's 62.41 lakh cases.
The crime rate measured per lakh population fell from 448.3 in 2023 to 418.9 in 2024. Kerala, Puducherry, and West Bengal demonstrated effective crime-solving, leading in charge sheet filing rates. Changes introduced in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita served as a contributing factor to the drop in crime rates.
While the overall crime numbers have decreased, cybercrime and economic offences witnessed a rise, highlighting the evolving nature of criminal activities. Meanwhile, a seizure of 8,21,100 fake Indian currency notes underscored ongoing challenges in tackling counterfeit operations.
