Rubio Aims to Mend Vatican Ties Amid Trump's Pope Criticism
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarks on a diplomatic visit to the Vatican, seeking to ease tensions sparked by President Trump's criticism of Pope Leo XIV. Rubio's visit aims to maintain dialogue with the Holy See and address broader issues like the US-Israeli conflict in Iran and Cuba relations.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarked on a diplomatic mission to the Vatican on Thursday, in an attempt to smooth over relations following President Donald Trump's recent criticism of Pope Leo XIV. The pope had become a target of Trump's ire due to his stance on US and global issues, particularly the US-Israeli conflict in Iran.
Pope Leo XIV, known for advocating peace in alignment with Catholic values, rebuked Trump’s portrayal of his views, emphasizing that the church opposes any nuclear arms race. Vatican officials, including Cardinal Pietro Parolin, have criticized Trump’s attacks in diplomatic terms, defending Leo’s position.
While Rubio’s visit aimed to restore dialogue with the Vatican, his meetings with other European leaders, such as Italy's Premier Giorgia Meloni, are expected to be challenging, given the tensions over the Iran war and US foreign policies. Additionally, discussions on US-Cuba relations during his visit underline broader international diplomatic concerns.
