India Post Launches Modernisation Drive with First Upgraded Smart Post Office in Delhi

India Post has launched a major nationwide modernisation drive aimed at transforming traditional post offices into digitally enabled, citizen-centric public service hubs, with the inauguration of the newly renovated Nehru Place Post Office in New Delhi marking the first major rollout under the initiative.
The upgraded facility was dedicated to the public by Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, alongside Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta and Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani.
Senior officials from the Department of Posts, including Secretary (Posts) Smt. Vandita Kaul, Director General Postal Services Shri Jitendra Gupta and Chief Postmaster General Delhi Circle Shri Akhilesh Pandey, were also present during the inauguration ceremony.
India Post Described as "Nation's Lifeline"
Addressing the gathering, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the enduring importance of India Post as one of the country's most trusted public institutions.
Drawing a powerful analogy, the Union Minister said that just as arteries carrying blood sustain the human body, the Department of Posts connects and serves every corner of India through its unmatched network and dedicated workforce.
He particularly acknowledged the role of Dakiyas (postal workers), describing them as deeply connected to households and communities across the country.
The Minister stressed that legacy institutions must evolve to remain relevant in a rapidly changing digital and service-driven environment.
₹5,000 Crore IT Modernisation Push Underway
Shri Scindia revealed that the Department of Posts has invested nearly ₹5,000 crore in upgrading and modernising its IT infrastructure as part of its digital transformation programme.
According to the Minister, India Post has already rolled out Advanced Postal Technology across the network over the past year.
As part of the modernisation programme, the Department has introduced several technology-driven and citizen-focused reforms, including:

UPI-enabled postal services

OTP-based delivery systems

24x7 and extended-hour post offices

guaranteed delivery systems such as 24 Speed Post and 48 Speed Post

Officials say these measures are intended to improve operational efficiency, customer convenience and delivery reliability.
India Post's Massive National Footprint Highlighted
The Union Minister also underlined the enormous operational scale of India Post, describing it as one of the largest postal and public service networks in the world.
According to official figures, India Post currently operates:

more than 1.65 lakh post offices nationwide

delivers nearly 90 crore letters annually

handles around 7.5 crore parcels every year

manages over 40 crore Post Office Savings Bank accounts

oversees deposits exceeding ₹23 lakh crore
The figures demonstrate the continuing relevance of India Post even in the digital era, particularly in financial inclusion and last-mile public service delivery.
Delhi Gets First Upgraded Smart Post Office
Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta welcomed the launch of the upgraded Nehru Place Post Office and thanked the Department of Posts for selecting the national capital for the country's first modernised post office under the nationwide initiative.
She said the transformation reflects the Government's commitment toward strengthening citizen-centric public infrastructure.

Reaffirming the Department's "Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa" vision, he said India Post aims to transform itself "from a monument into a movement."
He also highlighted the critical contribution of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), describing them as the backbone of rural postal connectivity and services in India.
