India Post has launched a major nationwide modernisation drive aimed at transforming traditional post offices into digitally enabled, citizen-centric public service hubs, with the inauguration of the newly renovated Nehru Place Post Office in New Delhi marking the first major rollout under the initiative.

The upgraded facility was dedicated to the public by Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, alongside Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta and Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani.

Senior officials from the Department of Posts, including Secretary (Posts) Smt. Vandita Kaul, Director General Postal Services Shri Jitendra Gupta and Chief Postmaster General Delhi Circle Shri Akhilesh Pandey, were also present during the inauguration ceremony.

India Post Described as "Nation's Lifeline"

Addressing the gathering, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the enduring importance of India Post as one of the country's most trusted public institutions.

Drawing a powerful analogy, the Union Minister said that just as arteries carrying blood sustain the human body, the Department of Posts connects and serves every corner of India through its unmatched network and dedicated workforce.

He particularly acknowledged the role of Dakiyas (postal workers), describing them as deeply connected to households and communities across the country.

The Minister stressed that legacy institutions must evolve to remain relevant in a rapidly changing digital and service-driven environment.

₹5,000 Crore IT Modernisation Push Underway

Shri Scindia revealed that the Department of Posts has invested nearly ₹5,000 crore in upgrading and modernising its IT infrastructure as part of its digital transformation programme.

According to the Minister, India Post has already rolled out Advanced Postal Technology across the network over the past year.

As part of the modernisation programme, the Department has introduced several technology-driven and citizen-focused reforms, including:

  • UPI-enabled postal services

  • OTP-based delivery systems

  • 24x7 and extended-hour post offices

  • guaranteed delivery systems such as 24 Speed Post and 48 Speed Post

  • digitally integrated customer services

Officials say these measures are intended to improve operational efficiency, customer convenience and delivery reliability.

India Post's Massive National Footprint Highlighted

The Union Minister also underlined the enormous operational scale of India Post, describing it as one of the largest postal and public service networks in the world.

According to official figures, India Post currently operates:

  • more than 1.65 lakh post offices nationwide

  • delivers nearly 90 crore letters annually

  • handles around 7.5 crore parcels every year

  • manages over 40 crore Post Office Savings Bank accounts

  • oversees deposits exceeding ₹23 lakh crore

The figures demonstrate the continuing relevance of India Post even in the digital era, particularly in financial inclusion and last-mile public service delivery.

Delhi Gets First Upgraded Smart Post Office

Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta welcomed the launch of the upgraded Nehru Place Post Office and thanked the Department of Posts for selecting the national capital for the country's first modernised post office under the nationwide initiative.

She said the transformation reflects the Government's commitment toward strengthening citizen-centric public infrastructure.

The Chief Minister praised India Post's evolution into a modern multi-service institution offering:

  • banking services

  • Aadhaar facilities

  • passport services

  • insurance services

  • digital citizen services

all under one roof.

After touring the upgraded facility, she remarked that the renovated post office was so impressive that it genuinely made her say "WOW".

"Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa" Vision Reaffirmed

Minister of State Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani emphasized the importance of modern public infrastructure in meeting changing citizen expectations.

Reaffirming the Department's "Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa" vision, he said India Post aims to transform itself "from a monument into a movement."

He also highlighted the critical contribution of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), describing them as the backbone of rural postal connectivity and services in India.

Modernisation Initiative Designed Around Citizen Experience

Secretary (Posts) Smt. Vandita Kaul said the modernisation initiative is focused on improving:

  • customer experience

  • operational efficiency

  • service quality

  • digital integration

  • accessibility standards

while preserving the longstanding public trust associated with India Post.

Officials say the upgraded facilities are intended to create more welcoming, efficient and user-friendly public spaces.

Nehru Place Post Office Redesigned as Smart Public Service Hub

Located in one of Delhi's busiest commercial districts, the Nehru Place Post Office was selected as the first site under a national Proof of Concept (PoC) initiative covering 40 post offices across 17 states.

The redesign was carried out using a Design Manual developed jointly by:

  • School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi

  • Department of Posts

The renovation incorporates principles of modern public architecture focused on:

  • openness

  • accessibility

  • citizen interaction

  • digital integration

  • seamless service delivery

Key features of the upgraded facility include:

  • standardized India Post façade

  • illuminated signage

  • modern waiting areas

  • modular service counters

  • improved lighting systems

  • barrier-free access

  • digitally integrated service zones

Officials say the redesign aims to create a smoother and more welcoming public experience.

Post Offices Reimagined as "Jan Seva Connect" Centres

The upgraded Nehru Place facility reflects the Department's broader vision of transforming post offices into modern "Jan Seva Connect" centres delivering multiple citizen services under one platform.

Services available through the network include:

  • Speed Post

  • Aadhaar services

  • Post Office Savings Bank

  • Passport Seva Kendra services

  • Postal Life Insurance

  • philately services

The Government believes integrating multiple services within post offices can significantly improve public access and service delivery efficiency.

Expansion Planned Across India in FY 2026–27

Following the launch of the Nehru Place pilot, the Department of Posts has already identified:

120 additional post offices nationwide

for similar modernisation during FY 2026–27.

Officials say the initiative forms part of the broader vision for Viksit Bharat 2047 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

The programme aims to reposition India Post as:

  • a modern public service institution

  • a digital citizen services platform

  • a community connectivity hub

  • a financial inclusion network

  • a logistics and e-commerce facilitator

India Post Positioning Itself for Digital Era

Industry observers say India Post's transformation reflects broader changes occurring within public sector institutions as India accelerates digital governance and citizen service modernisation.

The Department's combination of:
