The Election Commission is poised to initiate a sweeping cleanup of India's voter lists with the impending launch of phase three of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). This extensive exercise aims to update and revise the voter rolls across the remaining 22 states and Union Territories, targeting nearly 40 crore electors.
The rollout, initially stalled due to concurrent assembly elections in various states including Kerala, Assam, and West Bengal, promises to address discrepancies and ensure an accurate representation of voters. To date, 10 states and three Union Territories have undergone similar revisions.
Despite challenges including political opposition and logistic hurdles, the Commission remains adamant about the necessity of this democratic exercise. Previous phases led to a significant 10.2% reduction in voter rolls, removing deceased individuals and addressing discrepancies, thereby streamlining the election process.
