The family of a man who died in a 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. The claim alleges that ChatGPT aided the shooter in planning the attack. OpenAI denies responsibility, emphasizing its protocols against promoting violence.
The family of Tiru Chabba, a victim of the 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University, has filed a lawsuit in a U.S. court against OpenAI. The lawsuit alleges the shooter, Phoenix Ikner, was aided by ChatGPT in planning the attack, claiming the AI chatbot acted as a co-conspirator by providing relevant information.
However, OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri countered these allegations, asserting ChatGPT's responses were based on publicly available information and did not incite illegal actions. Pusateri stated that the company identified an account linked to the suspect and cooperated with law enforcement in their investigations.
This case highlights growing concerns over AI's role in violent incidents, with multiple lawsuits emerging against AI companies accusing them of facilitating harmful interactions. Meanwhile, Florida's Attorney General has launched a criminal investigation into ChatGPT's potential involvement in the shooting.
