In a decisive move influenced by public demand, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, C Joseph Vijay, announced the closure of 717 state-run liquor outlets, including 276 near places of worship.

The decision comes amid growing calls for prohibition from women and political entities. Vijay's administration aims for a safer public environment.

However, opposition parties, such as the DMK, have dismissed the action as a publicity stunt, questioning its efficacy. Meanwhile, TASMAC continues to operate thousands of outlets statewide, contributing significantly to Tamil Nadu's revenue.
