The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed the release of payments for private student accommodation providers across South African universities, as the institution intensifies efforts to stabilise student housing funding and implement a more transparent and predictable payment system.

In a statement issued on Monday, NSFAS announced that accommodation payments were officially released on Thursday, 7 May 2026, providing financial relief to thousands of accommodation providers and students affected by payment uncertainties earlier in the academic year.

The funding agency said providers banking with First National Bank (FNB) receive payments immediately after release, while providers using other banks may experience slight delays due to standard interbank processing procedures.

Over R1.1 Billion Disbursed in Single Quarter

NSFAS revealed that during the current quarter alone, it has processed three major accommodation payment disbursements totaling more than R1.1 billion, benefiting over 100 000 students nationwide.

The scale of the payments highlights the enormous financial and operational footprint of the student funding system, which plays a central role in supporting access to higher education for low-income and working-class students across South Africa.

Officials say the latest disbursement reflects NSFAS's efforts to improve payment efficiency and restore confidence among accommodation providers, many of whom have faced mounting financial pressure due to delays and administrative bottlenecks in previous funding cycles.

Direct Payment System Expanding Across Accommodation Sector

NSFAS said significant progress has been made in integrating accommodation providers into its new direct payment system for 2026.

According to the scheme:

  • 95 percent of accommodation providers listed on NSFAS solution partner portals have successfully completed banking verification

  • Verified providers are now included in the direct payment system for 2026

  • Remaining providers are currently undergoing one-on-one engagement processes to finalise integration

The organisation said the transition is aimed at improving accountability, reducing administrative delays and creating a more reliable accommodation payment framework.

"To date, 95% of accommodation providers listed on our solution partner portals have had their banking details successfully verified and are now included in direct payments for 2026," NSFAS stated.

Monthly Disbursement Schedule to Improve Predictability

As part of broader administrative reforms, NSFAS announced plans to issue a monthly disbursement schedule to accredited accommodation providers.

The move is intended to improve financial planning and predictability within the student accommodation sector, which has long complained about inconsistent payment cycles and communication challenges.

NSFAS urged accommodation providers to ensure compliance with key payment requirements, including:

  • Verification of students' funding status

  • Submission of valid signed lease agreements

  • Accurate student accommodation records

The scheme stressed that these requirements remain mandatory conditions for payment processing.

NSFAS Takes Over Accommodation Payment Administration

The student funding agency also explained that it is now legally required to manage accommodation payment functions internally beginning in 2026.

According to NSFAS, the transition away from previous systems has already helped address several longstanding operational issues, including:

  • Delays in institutional confirmation of students

  • Disruptions in payment cycles

  • Incorrect classification of students as transport allowance recipients

  • Uncertainty around accommodation accreditation status

Officials say centralising payment administration is intended to strengthen governance, improve oversight and reduce inconsistencies in how accommodation allowances are processed across institutions.

Accommodation Providers Under Financial Pressure

NSFAS acknowledged that private accommodation providers continue to face severe operational challenges, including:

  • Rising electricity and utility costs

  • Municipal service delivery problems

  • Inflationary pressures

  • Maintenance and operational expenses

  • Delayed payment risks

Student accommodation providers have increasingly raised concerns about sustainability, particularly smaller operators dependent on regular NSFAS payments to maintain services and housing standards.

Industry stakeholders have repeatedly called for more transparent communication and stable funding mechanisms to avoid disruptions that directly affect students.

NSFAS Promises More Transparent and Stable System

The funding scheme said it remains committed to building a more predictable, transparent and accountable accommodation payment framework through collaboration with sector associations and solution partners.

Among the outstanding issues currently under discussion are:

  • Finalisation of 2026 rental rates

  • Standardisation of payment processes

  • Improved administrative coordination

  • Faster dispute resolution mechanisms

NSFAS stated that it will continue resolving payment challenges on a case-by-case basis while encouraging providers experiencing problems to engage directly with the organisation for assistance.

"NSFAS remains committed to the prompt, case-by-case resolution of all payment challenges," the statement said.

Student Accommodation Remains Critical National Higher Education Issue

South Africa's student accommodation sector has become an increasingly important component of the country's higher education system, particularly as university enrolments continue to rise.

Many students funded by NSFAS rely heavily on private accommodation providers due to shortages in university-owned residences.

The stability of accommodation funding has therefore become central to:

  • Student academic performance

  • University retention rates

  • Campus stability

  • Student wellbeing

  • Access to higher education

Disruptions in accommodation payments have in previous years contributed to protests, evictions, financial distress among providers and uncertainty for students.

NSFAS Faces Ongoing Pressure to Reform Administration

The latest announcement comes as NSFAS continues broader institutional reforms aimed at addressing long-standing concerns around governance, payment administration and operational efficiency.

The scheme has faced repeated criticism in recent years over:

  • Payment delays

  • Technical system failures

  • Allowance processing issues

  • Administrative bottlenecks

  • Accommodation accreditation disputes

Government and higher education stakeholders have increasingly pushed for stronger oversight and improved operational systems to stabilise the student funding ecosystem.

Focus on Long-Term Stability and Student Wellbeing

NSFAS concluded by thanking accommodation providers for their continued partnership and reaffirming its commitment to ensuring long-term administrative stability and student support.

The organisation said its ongoing reforms are focused not only on payment efficiency but also on safeguarding the wellbeing of NSFAS-funded students who depend on accommodation support to continue their studies.

Higher education analysts say the success of the new direct payment system could become a key test of NSFAS's broader efforts to modernise and rebuild confidence in South Africa's student financial aid framework.
