Maritime Tensions Rise: Vessel Seized Near UAE Waters
A vessel was seized by Iranian personnel northeast of Fujairah while at anchor. The Honduras-flagged Hui Chuan is reportedly heading towards Iranian waters. The incident is part of ongoing maritime tensions involving Iran. The vessel's last known location was within Iran's EEZ.
A vessel was seized by unauthorized individuals while anchored northeast of the United Arab Emirates' port of Fujairah and is now heading towards Iranian waters, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.
Two maritime security sources identified the ship as the Honduras-flagged Hui Chuan fishery research vessel. Recent tensions include two other vessels captured by Iran amid a conflict initiated by U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran on February 28.
The incident occurred 38 nautical miles from Fujairah, with a report submitted by the vessel's security officer, detailed the British navy agency, UKMTO. Risk management firm Vanguard noted the incident's timing at 0545 GMT on Thursday.
Vanguard reported that the vessel, while anchored, was commandeered by Iranian personnel. It is reportedly now en route to Iranian territorial waters and stopped transmitting its location via the Automated Identification System (AIS).
Attempts to contact the vessel's operator, SG Navigation of the Marshall Islands, were unsuccessful. Ship tracking data showed the last sighting of the vessel in the Gulf of Oman, near Iran's EEZ, on May 12.
An Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) can extend up to 24 miles from a nation's coast.
