Justice Served: Three Life Sentences for Heinous Crimes in Kerala

A Kerala court has handed down a stringent sentence, imposing three life imprisonments on a 39-year-old man for the horrifying repeated sexual assault of a minor girl during 2023-24. This case, presided over by Karunagappally Fast Track Special Court judge Rajeevan Vachal, highlights the severe consequences of crimes under the IPC, POCSO Act, and Juvenile Justice Act, according to special public prosecutor (SPP) N C Premchandran.

The convicted individual's crime first unfolded in 2023, targeting a young girl in class 5, and persisted for nearly a year. The alarming change in the child's behavior, due to her withdrawal from studies and other activities, ultimately alerted her mother, leading to the involvement of the school counsellor. It was through this engagement that the horrific details of the assault were revealed, subsequently involving the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and facilitating police intervention.

The case was bolstered by the testimony of 11 witnesses and 18 pieces of documentary evidence, which played a crucial role in securing the conviction. Alongside the life sentences, the court also imposed a fine of Rs three lakh on the offender, showcasing a robust response to such grievous offenses in society.
