Iraq's New Prime Minister Faces Immediate Challenges
Ali al-Zaidi was sworn in as Iraq's new Prime Minister, but faces challenges due to a partial cabinet. While Basim Mohammed is appointed as oil minister and Fuad Hussein continues as foreign minister, key positions such as interior and defense remain unresolved amidst calls for disarming militias and curbing corruption.
Ali al-Zaidi took the oath as Iraq's new Prime Minister on Thursday, stepping into a leadership role with an incomplete cabinet. This development follows the parliament's inability to reach a consensus on the appointments for critical positions, including the interior and defense ministries.
Despite these obstacles, Basim Mohammed has been named as the oil minister, and Fuad Hussein retains his post as foreign minister in the new government setup. Lawmakers confirmed the approval of 14 ministers, though significant roles remain undecided.
As Prime Minister, al-Zaidi is expected to handle pressing challenges such as disbanding Iran-backed militias, addressing pervasive corruption, and navigating Iraq's diplomatic relations between Washington and Tehran.
