The Philippines' Ombudsman has ordered a six-month suspension of the Senate's head of security following a chaotic shootout that led to a wanted politician's escape. Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla described the suspension as preventive, ensuring a thorough investigation into the incident.
The suspension of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Mao Aplasca came into effect on Friday. He had admitted firing a warning shot during a standoff with the National Bureau of Investigation inside the Senate. Senator Ronald dela Rosa, associated with the controversial 'war on drugs', encouraged supporters to resist his impending arrest by the ICC.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called for calm, asserting that no government personnel were involved in the incident. An investigation by the Senate and law enforcement agencies is now underway to address the serious concerns raised by the event.
