The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has sharply criticized a recent judgment by the Madhya Pradesh High Court regarding the Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque dispute. The court's decision to recognize the complex as a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, overturning a previous Archaeological Survey of India order, has been termed 'unfortunate' by the CPI(M) in its statement on Saturday.
The party expressed 'grave concern' that the ruling could exacerbate communal tensions in India. It argues that such judgments are part of a broader trend of reopening historical and religious disputes, potentially threatening the secular fabric of the country.
Citing the Places of Worship Act of 1991, enacted to maintain the religious character of sites as they were at the time of Independence, CPI(M) contended the verdict violated this law. Urging the judiciary to uphold secular principles, CPI(M) hopes the Supreme Court will overturn the decision, amidst fears it strengthens communal forces.
