West Bengal Accelerates Border Fence Effort Amid Land Acquisition Challenges

West Bengal's government plans to expedite land acquisition for the India-Bangladesh border fence, promising completion within 45 days. Minister Ashok Kirtania addressed land acquisition issues in North 24 Parganas, especially in Basirhat where residents resist relocation. This move follows a cabinet decision by the BJP government led by Suvendu Adhikari.

The West Bengal government has committed to expedite the process of land acquisition to facilitate the erection of a border fence along the India-Bangladesh border within 45 days, according to state minister Ashok Kirtania.

Kirtania, responsible for the Food and Supply department, visited his constituency in North 24 Parganas district to assess the situation. He mentioned that while most land acquisition in the area is progressing well, resistance has been noted in Basirhat, where residents refuse to relocate or accept rehabilitation offers.

The recently installed BJP government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari outlined this initiative in its inaugural cabinet meeting and has approved the transfer of about 600 acres of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) to complete the fencing project.
