West Bengal Paves the Way for Crucial Highway Developments

The West Bengal government approves the transfer of seven national highway stretches to central agencies, enabling delayed infrastructure projects. The handover aims to enhance connectivity with neighboring countries and regions within India, marking a significant step in the coordinated execution of national infrastructure developments.

The government of West Bengal has granted initial approval for the transfer of seven key national highway stretches to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). This decision anticipates the advancement of long-overdue infrastructure projects in the state.

The clearance from the state's Public Works Department has been awaited for nearly a year, despite repeated attempts by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for a formal handover. This move is expected to unfreeze development on these crucial corridors.

The highways handed over include strategic routes connecting regions such as Jangipur, Krishnagar, Bongaon, and Basirhat, stretching up to the borders with Bangladesh, and vital links with Sikkim, Bhutan, and north Bengal. This development is anticipated to strengthen regional connectivity and drive coordinated infrastructure growth.
