The West Bengal government has dissolved the Police Welfare Board amid allegations from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who claims the board operated as a political front, enabling illegal service extensions. During an administrative review meeting at Diamond Harbour, Adhikari emphasized the importance of strict law enforcement and condemned any attacks on police personnel.
The Chief Minister announced that a new welfare mechanism will be established within three months in consultation with retired police officers and associations. He unveiled plans for a committee under the chief secretary to draft a proposal for cabinet approval, emphasizing the need to alleviate the 'atmosphere of fear' that has gripped the police administration in recent years.
Adhikari also responded to recent violence in Asansol, where arrests were made after a police outpost was attacked following a complaint over loudspeakers at a mosque. He urged police to enforce orders on illegal activities, including tolls and mining, peacefully. Additionally, Adhikari proposed measures to post women police personnel near their home districts and sought to extend the deployment of CAPF personnel to maintain law and order.
