An inquiry into Justice Yashwant Varma was submitted to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, following allegations of unaccounted cash found at his residence during a fire. The Judgments Inquiry Committee, which focuses on the accusations that led to impeachment proceedings, delivered its findings on Monday.
The incident dates back to March 14, 2025, when a fire at Varma's official Delhi residence uncovered burnt currency in a storeroom. An in-house committee had earlier concluded Justice Varma's involvement. More than 200 MPs signed a motion for his impeachment, pressing serious charges against him.
As Parliament geared up for potential removal proceedings, Justice Varma resigned from the Allahabad High Court, pre-empting further action. With his resignation, the ongoing impeachment efforts have been deemed unnecessary, closing a contentious chapter in judicial proceedings.
