A group of persons allegedly attacked an accused booked for kidnapping and rape under the POCSO Act when he was taken for his medical examination, police said on Wednesday.

An FIR was lodged on Wednesday against 10-12 unidentified persons in connection with the alleged attack on Tuesday on Gulzar Ahmad, they said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (East) Alok Kumar said that when Ahmad was taken for medical examination, some persons present at the spot became agitated and attempted to assault him, but the situation was immediately brought under control by the police personnel deployed there.

The police said that after the medical examination, around 10-12 unidentified persons again allegedly misbehaved with the accused and police personnel, and tried to drag the accused out of the police vehicle.

''The accused was safely medically examined and later produced before a court, which sent him to judicial custody,'' the ASP said.

''In connection with the incident, a case has been registered at Patti Kotwali Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against 10-12 unidentified persons,'' he said.

The police said attempts are being made to arrest the accused and further legal proceedings are underway.
