Railways Intensifies AI-Driven Security Measures Amid Rising Concerns Over Anti-Social Activities

During the review, officials noted that initial investigations into several recent incidents, including multiple fire-related cases, have indicated possible involvement of anti-social elements.

Indian Railways has significantly intensified the use of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), drones, CCTV surveillance systems and digital intelligence tools to strengthen the safety and security of trains, passengers, railway stations and the country's vast rail network.

The enhanced security strategy was reviewed during a high-level meeting held at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi, chaired by Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw. Ministers of State for Railways Shri V. Somanna and Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu were also present along with senior Railway Board officials and field officers from various railway zones across the country.

The meeting focused on strengthening intelligence gathering systems, improving surveillance infrastructure and enhancing coordination among railway security agencies in view of emerging security concerns across the rail network.

The Railway Ministry stated that these incidents are being treated with utmost seriousness and are currently under active investigation by the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

Officials informed that in several cases, timely intervention and proactive response by railway authorities helped prevent potentially major accidents and damage. The Ministry emphasized that rapid response mechanisms and improved field-level vigilance played a critical role in averting larger security threats.

The security review meeting underlined the importance of strengthening intelligence gathering at the grassroots or beat level of the Railway Protection Force. Discussions focused on improving reporting systems from field units and accelerating the processing of security-related inputs through technology-enabled monitoring systems.

A major emphasis was placed on expanding the use of AI-driven surveillance technologies capable of identifying suspicious movements, unattended objects and unusual behavioural patterns across railway premises. Officials also discussed upgrading CCTV infrastructure with higher-resolution cameras and enhanced monitoring capabilities to improve real-time surveillance across stations, platforms and operational zones.

The Railway Ministry is increasingly relying on drones and digital monitoring systems to strengthen surveillance over railway tracks, sensitive installations and high-risk areas. Advanced technology tools are expected to improve situational awareness and help security agencies respond more quickly to emerging threats.

The meeting also focused extensively on cyber security measures as Indian Railways continues to expand digital systems and technology-based operations. Officials discussed the need for stronger cyber protection frameworks to safeguard operational systems, passenger data and critical railway infrastructure from digital threats and cyber-attacks.

In addition to technological upgrades, the Ministry stressed the importance of improving coordination between the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) through better information-sharing mechanisms and integrated operational strategies.

The Railway Ministry also called upon passengers to actively support security efforts by remaining alert and vigilant during travel and while waiting at railway stations. Authorities urged passengers to immediately report any suspicious person, object or activity noticed on railway premises through the Railway helpline number 139.

Officials stated that public cooperation is becoming increasingly important in ensuring railway safety due to the massive scale of the Indian Railways network, which serves millions of passengers daily across thousands of stations and trains.

The Ministry reiterated that passenger safety remains one of the highest priorities of Indian Railways and that security modernization efforts are being undertaken in mission mode across the country.

Experts believe that the growing integration of Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, surveillance technologies and predictive monitoring systems could significantly strengthen India's railway security ecosystem in the coming years. AI-enabled systems are expected to improve threat detection, crowd monitoring, emergency response and overall operational efficiency.

The move also reflects the broader push toward modernization and digital transformation within Indian Railways under ongoing infrastructure and technology reforms aimed at creating safer, smarter and more resilient transportation systems.

Railway officials indicated that security audits, technology deployment and intelligence coordination mechanisms will continue to be strengthened further in response to evolving security challenges and increasing passenger volumes across the national railway network.
