In the Assam Assembly on Wednesday, opposition lawmakers condemned the proposed Uniform Civil Code Bill, calling it a political maneuver by the BJP and urging extensive dialogue with all affected parties before its enactment. They argued that the Bill could undermine the rights of specific community groups.
Congress leader Wajed Ali Choudhury highlighted that many issues the UCC seeks to address, such as divorce and marriage registration, are already covered by existing laws. He questioned the motive behind the Bill, suggesting it complicates rather than simplifies legal processes. His concerns were supported by fellow party members who noted that past recommendations called for inclusive stakeholder consultations.
Choudhury continued to criticize the Bill, stating it is inherently undemocratic to interfere with personal issues and questioned its uniformity since it excludes tribal populations. The Bill, introduced by the Assam government, aims to create a universal set of laws governing personal matters across religions, excluding Scheduled Tribes, and imposing penalties for infractions like polygamy.
AIUDF MLA Mazibur Rahman added that the proposed UCC appears to contradict fundamental rights, as it may harm specific communities under the guise of directive principles. He remarked that existing laws already encapsulate the issues the UCC claims to address. The opposition continues to push for greater inclusion and dialogue as the Bill progresses.
