The Assam government's move to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill has ignited a wave of opposition from political parties including Congress and Raijor Dal. They demanded a more thorough review through a Select Committee, citing concerns over political motivations and inadequate consultation with stakeholders.
Opponents of the Bill, like Congress leader Wajed Ali Choudhury, argue that existing laws already address many issues like polygamy and marriage registration, questioning the necessity of the UCC. Meanwhile, the Bill also faces criticism over excluding Scheduled Tribes, with accusations of it being a diversion from pressing issues such as unemployment and education.
Trinamool Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed expressed selective support, emphasizing the need for broader discussions on contentious provisions. Critics have dubbed the Bill a tool for "moral policing," intruding into personal liberties and potentially overstepping fundamental rights.
Despite the controversy, the Assam government persists, proposing measures like compulsory marriage and live-in relationship registration. However, skepticism remains about whether the Bill primarily serves as a vehicle for political maneuvering rather than reform.
