Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the Uniform Civil Code has been the BJP's resolve since the day of its foundation.

Congratulating the people of Assam on the passing of UCC Bill in the Assembly, Shah said on 'X', under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, BJP-led state governments are establishing uniform law for every citizen.

''I am delighted that after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, Assam too has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill today. On this occasion, I congratulate Chief Minister of Assam Shri @himantabiswa Ji and all the legislators who supported this bill,'' he said.

''We are committed to enshrining the principle of equality before the law in every part of the country,'' Shah said.

The Assam Assembly on Wednesday passed the UCC Bill that seeks to put in place a common legal framework to govern marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships irrespective of religion, even as the opposition demanded that it be sent to a select committee.

With the passage of the Bill, Assam became the third state, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to pass a Uniform Civil Code Bill.

Goa also has one common civil law, which continued from its erstwhile Portuguese colonial period.
