The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has put on hold the elections for its Standing Committee's six vacant seats and the roles of chairperson and deputy chairperson for 12 ward committees. This decision comes into effect until further notice, according to officials.

The election, originally slated for June 3, was cancelled moving forward indefinitely, though no concrete reasoning was offered. An official notice confirmed the scrapping of the nomination process, which had the last day for submissions set on May 29. The postponement is speculated to stem from political rifts blocking candidate selection.

Leader of the Opposition in MCD, Ankush Narang, criticized the procedural discrepancies, alleging the decision bypassed the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act's stipulations. He accused the BJP of deferring the elections due to internal conflicts and potential loss of influence in certain areas. No formal reaction has yet been issued by the BJP per these allegations.

Despite the current pause, officials suggest the elections might be rescheduled later in June. The Standing Committee remains understaffed, with six positions vacant following recent retirements. Potential reshuffling is anticipated as the civic body attempts to navigate the impasse.
