Authorities in Lucknow have heightened security in Malihabad following rising tensions over religious practices at a local site identified as the Malihabad Fort. Additional police and PAC personnel have been stationed to manage the situation ahead of the Bakrid festivities, according to local officials on Wednesday.
The conflict stems from differing local claims on the land within the Kasmandi area, measuring approximately 25-30 bighas. Members of the Pasi community assert that the site connects to Maharaja Kansa Pasi and should be preserved as a temple rather than a mosque or mausoleum. The dispute has intensified recently due to outsiders coming to perform namaz at this site.
Local voices emphasize that their objections are not rooted in Hindu-Muslim tensions but revolve around maintaining local customs. A member of the community explained that traditions had not previously included offering prayers here, a recent development allegedly instigating the discord.
Alongside local protesters, Hindu Mahasabha affiliates have expressed their intent to pursue legal action, demanding the site's recognition as a Shiva temple and its handover to the Pasi community. They also seek action against religious leaders conducting unauthorized prayers. Police have assured the public that they are prepared to maintain order during the upcoming festival.
