Life Sentences in Cambodian Scam Centre Murder Case

Six Chinese nationals have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Cambodian court for torturing and murdering a South Korean student. The incident has spurred significant diplomatic tension, particularly with South Korea, as authorities crack down on scam centres accused of fraud and human rights abuses across Southeast Asia.

A Cambodian court has handed life sentences to six Chinese nationals for the torture and murder of a South Korean student linked to Cambodia's scam centres, as per a court spokesperson's announcement on Wednesday.

The murder, which occurred in August last year, sparked diplomatic strains with South Korea, leading to travel bans, sanctions, and intensified efforts to dismantle the extensive fraud operations accused of harming workers and defrauding billions globally.

The Kampot Provincial Court found the defendants guilty of torture, murder, and aggravated fraud. An autopsy confirmed the 22-year-old victim died due to blunt force trauma from severe beatings. Following the convictions, China's foreign ministry expressed a commitment to international cooperation in combating telecom fraud and other cross-border crimes.
