A catastrophic fire engulfed a dormitory at Utumishi Girls School in central Kenya, leading to the tragic deaths of at least 16 students. The incident occurred on Thursday and has left the nation in mourning as authorities work to determine the cause.
Education Minister Julius Ogamba stated that 79 students were injured in the blaze. An investigation is underway to ascertain whether the school's adherence to the fire safety manual was adequate. The school, located about 120 kilometres from Nairobi, is managed by the Kenya Police Service and largely attended by the children of police officers.
Emergency services, led by police, have been actively involved in rescue efforts. Wambui Nderitu, on-site to check on her cousin, shared concerns regarding emergency procedures, revealing that one dormitory door was opened without alerting the students, while the other remained shut.
In response to the disaster, the Kenya Red Cross is assisting with medical treatments and providing psychological support for the families involved. The tragic event calls to mind similar past incidents, including a 2001 fire where 67 students perished and a 2017 tragedy in Nairobi.
