Birendra Baishya Appointed Chair of Parliamentary Committee on MPs' Salaries
Birendra Prasad Baishya takes on leadership of India's Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament for 2026-27. The committee is tasked with establishing regulations on parliamentary salaries, allowances, and pensions, comprising 15 members from both houses of Parliament.

Birendra Prasad Baishya, a Rajya Sabha representative from the Asom Gana Parishad, has been designated as the head of the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament for the term 2026-27.
The committee, which is responsible for drafting rules as per the Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament Act, 1954, includes 10 representatives from the Lok Sabha and five from the Rajya Sabha. According to a statement from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, Baishya was unanimously chosen as the chair of this committee during a recent session.
This committee holds the authority to formulate regulations, in consultation with the government, concerning the remuneration, allowances, and pensions of parliamentary members.
