In an unexpected move before Bakrid, Varanasi's historic Benia Bagh Bakra Market was sealed by the municipal authorities, leaving it desolate. The closure stemmed from complaints related to overcrowding and inadequate sanitation.
Typically bustling with activity, the market attracted traders from numerous nearby districts. Despite initial permission, authorities revoked access, enforcing the closure with police support.
Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal cited sanitation concerns as a significant factor behind the decision. The market, usually operational ahead of Bakrid, had been a key trading spot for nearly four decades. Traders expressed frustration at the abrupt termination, which disrupted their business plans during the festival.
Local resident Afroz Alam voiced concerns over the impact on both traders and buyers, as families like his faced challenges finding affordable alternatives. The decision sparked criticism from the community, highlighting the economic consequences faced by smaller traders.
