In a move to protest the handling of the Maratha quota issue, activist Manoj Jarange declared his intention to initiate an indefinite fast. The protest, set to begin Saturday, stems from accusations that the Maharashtra government, led by Devendra Fadnavis, has unfairly treated the Maratha community.
Jarange, meeting with state minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, urged the establishment of a Maratha ministry similar to the one for Other Backward Classes (OBC). He criticized the administration's delay in issuing Kunbi certificates, necessary for Marathas to obtain OBC reservation benefits, and highlighted the lack of resources and staff in reviewing historical documents.
Jarange's firm stance includes conducting his fast under harsh conditions without shelter. He reiterated the necessity for recognition of Marathas as Kunbis, which could increase tensions with the existing OBC community, hesitant about potential quota dilution. With previous discussions yielding limited results, Jarange calls for expedited action to prevent further unrest.
In response to the activist's concerns, Vikhe Patil assured that efforts are underway to streamline the certification process and acknowledged the issuance of 61,000 certificates since February. As the community's patience wanes, National OBC Mahasangh President Babanrao Taywade cautioned that any adverse changes to OBC reservations could spark widespread protests across the state.
