Ex-Shaolin Temple Leader Sentenced for Large-Scale Graft

Shi Yongxin, the former head of China's Shaolin Temple, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for significant misappropriation and corruption crimes. He received a fine of 3.5 million yuan after being found guilty of embezzling funds, accepting and giving bribes, and violating religious tenets.

Shi Yongxin, once a prominent figure in popularising kung fu, has been sentenced to 24 years behind bars by the Intermediate People's Court of Xinxiang City for corruption. Shi, known as the 'CEO monk', was also ordered to pay a hefty fine for his involvement in various financial crimes.

The former abbot misused his position for personal gain, embezzling significant sums from the Shaolin Temple and affiliated charity foundation. His actions, lasting until last year, involved taking bribes and influencing construction project decisions related to the temple. His trial highlighted the extensive impact of his unethical conduct on both financial and social fronts.

The court emphasized the severity of Shi's crimes due to their prolonged nature and substantial impact on the community. Despite his cooperation in disclosure and admission of guilt, his actions warranted a stern punishment to deter similar offenses. Shi accepted the court's judgment and decided not to appeal the verdict.
