Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, AVSM, has assumed charge as the 20th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC), India's only Tri-Service Operational Command. He took over the prestigious appointment at Sri Vijaya Puram on June 1, 2026, bringing with him more than 36 years of distinguished service in the Indian Navy and the broader defence establishment.

A specialist in Gunnery and Missiles, Vice Admiral McCarty succeeds to one of India's most strategically significant military commands, responsible for safeguarding national interests in the Indian Ocean Region and supporting India's growing role in the Indo-Pacific. His appointment comes at a time when maritime security and joint military operations are becoming increasingly important to India's national security framework.

Distinguished Naval Career Spanning Three Decades

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1989, Vice Admiral McCarty has served in a wide range of operational, training, staff and strategic appointments throughout his career.

He is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the National Defence College, New Delhi, institutions that have shaped many of India's senior military leaders.

His extensive experience covers frontline naval operations, personnel management, defence planning and international military cooperation. Over the years, he has built a reputation as a highly accomplished officer with expertise across multiple domains of naval and joint-service operations.

His appointment to lead the Andaman & Nicobar Command reflects the confidence placed in his leadership abilities and operational experience.

Commanded Key Naval Warships and Strategic Formations

Vice Admiral McCarty's operational career includes service as part of the commissioning crew of INS Delhi, one of the Indian Navy's frontline destroyers, where he completed all specialist appointments onboard.

He subsequently commanded several important naval vessels, including INS Ajay, INS Khanjar and the stealth frigate INS Shivalik, gaining extensive experience in maritime operations and fleet management.

His leadership responsibilities expanded further through a number of key staff and training appointments. These included serving as Training Commander at the Indian Naval Academy, Command Plans Officer at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command, and Commodore Naval Plans at Naval Headquarters.

Following his promotion to Flag Rank in 2020, he held several senior appointments, including Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Staff Requirements), Controller of Personnel Services and Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet (FOCWF), where he led one of the Indian Navy's most powerful operational formations.

In 2024, he was appointed as the tenth Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, overseeing the training and development of future naval officers.

Extensive Tri-Service and International Experience

Before assuming command of ANC, Vice Admiral McCarty served in consecutive tri-service appointments at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS).

During 2025 and 2026, he held the positions of Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Policy, Plans and Force Development) and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Doctrine, Organisation and Training). These assignments provided him with extensive exposure to joint military planning, force development and inter-service coordination.

His international experience includes serving as Directing Staff at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Sri Lanka, contributing to regional defence cooperation and professional military education.

He also served as Defence Advisor to Singapore and the Philippines from 2011 to 2015, strengthening India's defence diplomacy and military partnerships in Southeast Asia.

These overseas assignments have given him valuable insights into regional security dynamics and multilateral defence cooperation, both of which are increasingly important in the Indo-Pacific region.

Focus on Maritime Security and Joint Operations

After taking charge of the Andaman & Nicobar Command, Vice Admiral McCarty highlighted the strategic importance of the command in protecting India's maritime interests and maintaining stability across the Indian Ocean Region.

He reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing operational readiness, improving jointness among the armed forces and strengthening synergy between the Army, Navy and Air Force within the command structure.

The Andaman & Nicobar Command occupies a unique position in India's defence architecture as the country's only integrated tri-service operational command. Located at a critical maritime crossroads, it plays a key role in monitoring vital sea lanes, supporting regional security and advancing India's strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific.

Vice Admiral McCarty emphasized that the command will continue to serve as a crucial pillar of India's national security framework while contributing to peace, stability and maritime cooperation across the region.

With his extensive operational, strategic and tri-service experience, defence observers believe his leadership will further strengthen the command's capabilities and reinforce its role in safeguarding India's maritime interests amid an evolving regional security environment.
