A district court in The Hague has sentenced a 49-year-old Dutch woman, identified as Ayada K., to seven years in prison for war crimes.
The court found her guilty of allowing her then 14-year-old son to become a fighter for Islamic State, a move considered a war crime due to the recruitment of a child soldier.
Ayada K. took her children from the Netherlands to Syria in 2014. Her son joined Islamic State's military police, where he died two years later. Following the fall of Islamic State in 2019, she was repatriated in 2024 and arrested upon her return to the Netherlands.
