Thailand and Cambodia: A New Chapter in Maritime Dispute Resolution
Thailand has agreed to participate in a United Nations arbitration process to address a longstanding maritime boundary dispute with Cambodia. The decision follows Cambodia's move to initiate a compulsory conciliation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as bilateral efforts have reached an impasse.
Thailand has announced its participation in a United Nations arbitration process to resolve an enduring maritime boundary conflict with Cambodia. This step comes as Cambodia instigates a compulsory conciliation process per the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The dispute involves about 26,000 square kilometers of resource-rich sea territory in the Gulf of Thailand. Although bilateral discussions had occurred over the years, an amicable resolution has remained elusive, prompting Cambodia's recent move.
While Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed willingness to negotiate, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that no other bilateral talks would ensue, signaling a shift towards international mediation as bilateral efforts are put on hold.
