Indian Railways has approved a major infrastructure project to strengthen train operations on the Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section of South Central Railway. The project involves upgrading the existing 1x25 kV electric traction system to a more advanced 2x25 kV electric traction system across approximately 141 route kilometres.

The upgrade has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹285.01 crore and forms part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to enhance capacity and efficiency on heavily used rail corridors across the country. Officials said the new traction system will provide a more stable and reliable power supply for train operations. Improved electrical infrastructure is expected to support smoother train movement, reduce operational constraints and enhance overall safety and reliability on the route.

Upgrade to Benefit Passenger and Freight Operations

The Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal section is an important part of India's High-Density Network (HDN), one of the busiest segments of the national railway system. The route lies on the Dharmavaram-Dhone-Mahbubnagar-Secunderabad-Medchal-Mudkhed-Indore-Ajmer rail corridor, which handles substantial passenger and freight traffic throughout the year.

Railway officials believe that the introduction of the 2x25 kV traction system will improve the corridor's ability to handle increasing traffic demand. The upgraded system is designed to support higher train loads and improve operational performance, particularly on routes experiencing heavy usage. For passengers, the project is expected to contribute to more dependable train services and improved operational efficiency. For freight operators, enhanced power availability can help facilitate smoother movement of goods and improve logistics performance.

The upgrade also aligns with Indian Railways' long-term objective of modernising critical infrastructure to meet future transportation requirements.

Improved Capacity Expected to Support Economic Growth

The project is expected to play an important role in boosting freight movement across the region. Improved rail capacity and efficiency can help industries move raw materials and finished goods more effectively, strengthening supply chains and reducing transportation bottlenecks.

Officials said better freight handling capabilities will support trade and industrial activity in Telangana and adjoining regions while contributing to broader economic development. The adoption of advanced traction technology is part of Indian Railways' continuing investment in creating a future-ready rail network capable of meeting growing passenger and freight demands. By improving infrastructure on key routes, the national transporter aims to enhance operational efficiency while supporting economic growth and regional connectivity.

Once completed, the project is expected to strengthen the performance of one of the country's important rail corridors and deliver long-term benefits to passengers, businesses and industries that depend on reliable rail transport.
