Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos believes his team is ready for the challenge of facing Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as South Africa prepares for its long-awaited return to football's biggest tournament.

The national team has been based in Pachuca, Mexico, since last week, using the high-altitude city as part of its preparations for the tournament. Situated approximately 2,300 metres above sea level, the training camp has helped players adjust to conditions similar to those they will encounter during the competition. South Africa will take on co-host nation Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday, 11 June 2026, in front of what is expected to be a capacity crowd and a global television audience numbering in the millions.

Broos Expects Tough Test Against Strong Mexican Side

Speaking to the media ahead of the opening match, Broos described Mexico as one of the strongest teams South Africa could face in the tournament's opening round. According to the Belgian coach, Mexico's strengths lie in its movement, aggression and collective style of play. He pointed to the team's recent performance against Serbia as an example of its quality, particularly during the opening stages of the match.

Broos said Mexico attacks and defends as a unit, making it a well-balanced and dangerous opponent. Despite acknowledging the challenge, he stressed that South Africa has every reason to believe it can compete. The coach emphasized that his players must prepare thoroughly and perform at their highest level if they want to secure a positive result. He rejected any suggestion that Bafana Bafana would enter the match without a chance of success, saying football often produces surprises when teams execute their plans effectively.

Nation Rallies Behind Bafana Bafana

While the atmosphere inside Estadio Azteca is expected to favour the hosts, Broos said the squad remains motivated by the support it has received from South Africans back home. He acknowledged that only a limited number of South African supporters are likely to be present in the stadium but said the players are fully aware that millions of fans will be cheering them on across the country.

The team's World Cup campaign has also received strong backing from President Cyril Ramaphosa, who recently called on South Africans to unite behind the national side. In his weekly newsletter, the President said Bafana Bafana carries the hopes and support of more than 62 million South Africans. He noted that the country's return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010 represents a significant moment for the nation.

Ramaphosa linked the team's journey to South Africa's broader national story, highlighting democratic progress, economic recovery efforts and renewed optimism about the future. He encouraged citizens to celebrate not only the team's achievements but also the country's progress in building a united and inclusive society.

The President urged South Africans to put aside differences and rally behind the national flag and the national team during the tournament. As the countdown to kickoff continues, Bafana Bafana will carry both the expectations and the hopes of a nation eager to see its team shine once again on football's grandest stage.
