The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology has extended support to Bengaluru-based TIEA Connectors Pvt. Ltd. for the commercialization of advanced electrical connector technologies designed for aerospace, defence, space, and electric vehicle applications. The project, titled "Commercialization of Airborne Connectors for Aerospace, Defense & Charging Connectors for EV," is aimed at strengthening India's domestic capabilities in manufacturing high-reliability electrical interconnect systems that are essential for critical and high-performance industries. The initiative comes as India continues to expand its presence in advanced manufacturing, strategic technologies, defence production, and electric mobility while reducing dependence on imported components.
Technology built for extreme operating environments
Electrical connectors play a vital role in modern electronic systems by ensuring uninterrupted transmission of power, signals, and data. In sectors such as aerospace, defence, and space, these components must function reliably under intense vibration, shock, temperature variations, and harsh environmental conditions.
TIEA's technology is built around an advanced vibration-resistant contact architecture that helps maintain stable electrical performance even in highly demanding environments. The design uses a proprietary multi-point elastic contact mechanism that improves contact retention, lowers electrical resistance, and minimizes the risk of signal interruptions.
Unlike conventional connector systems that rely on stamped contacts, the new design offers multiple contact points that improve durability, vibration endurance, and overall operational life.
The connectors can maintain reliable electrical performance under vibration levels of up to 100G, making them suitable for mission-critical applications where failure is not an option. Manufactured using high-performance Beryllium Copper alloy, the connectors also feature specialized locking systems to ensure secure engagement during operation.
For strategic applications, silver and gold plating are used to enhance conductivity, corrosion resistance, and long-term reliability.
Supporting self-reliance and EV growth
The project aligns closely with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which focuses on building domestic capabilities in critical technologies and reducing dependence on imported products.
TIEA has established in-house expertise across the entire development cycle, including product design, engineering, tooling, prototyping, testing, validation, and manufacturing. Key processes such as precision tooling, high-speed stamping, scientific injection moulding, surface treatment, and performance testing are being carried out within India.
Apart from serving strategic sectors, the technology is expected to support India's rapidly growing electric vehicle ecosystem through the development of robust charging connectors designed for reliable performance and safety.
TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak said that reliable indigenous component technologies are becoming increasingly important as India strengthens its capabilities in aerospace, defence, space technology, and electric mobility. He noted that high-performance connectors form the foundation of modern electronic systems and play a crucial role in strengthening both technological self-reliance and supply chain resilience.
Company representatives welcomed the support, stating that it will help accelerate commercialization efforts and expand manufacturing capacity to meet rising demand from domestic and international markets across aerospace, defence, space, electric vehicle, and industrial sectors.
