New Zealand's Game Animal Council will welcome a refreshed leadership team from July, with Hunting and Fishing Minister James Meager announcing four appointments, including a new Chair. Current Council member Matt Clarke has been appointed Chair for a two-year term beginning 1 July 2026. He brings extensive governance and leadership experience to the position, along with a strong connection to New Zealand's hunting and outdoor communities. Mr Meager said Mr Clarke has already made a positive contribution to the Council and offers valuable continuity as the organisation continues its work supporting hunters and managing game animal resources.

Experienced Leaders Join the Council

Joining the Council are Hon Paula Bennett, Emeritus Professor Bruce McKenzie, and Jim Goodall, while Callum Sheridan has been reappointed for another term. All member appointments will run for three years from 1 July 2026. Ms Bennett brings a wealth of governance and public sector experience, having previously served as New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister. She currently chairs Pharmac and has extensive experience in statutory decision-making, leadership, and stakeholder engagement across a range of sectors.

Professor McKenzie adds significant expertise in conservation science, ecological systems, and land management. His background combines academic knowledge with practical experience, providing the Council with a strong understanding of environmental issues connected to hunting and wildlife management.

Industry and Hunting Knowledge Strengthens Representation

Mr Goodall joins the Council with a background in primary production and the wild game sector. His commercial and governance experience, along with his understanding of hunting, harvesting, and supply chains, is expected to bring a practical perspective to Council discussions and decision-making.

Mr Sheridan's reappointment ensures continuity within the organisation. His ongoing involvement with the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association and his hands-on knowledge of the hunting sector have made him a valuable contributor to the Council's work.

Supporting Sustainable Hunting Opportunities

The Game Animal Council advises the Minister and works alongside the Department of Conservation, hunters, landowners, and other stakeholders to promote safe and sustainable hunting practices across New Zealand. The Council also plays an important role in helping improve hunting opportunities while supporting responsible game animal management.

Mr Meager also acknowledged the service of outgoing Chair Grant Dodson and departing members John Cook and Andrew Simpson, thanking them for their commitment and contributions during their time on the Council.

The new appointments are expected to provide a mix of governance expertise, conservation knowledge, industry experience, and practical hunting insight as the Council continues its work over the coming years.
