New data shows that New Zealand's tourism sector is continuing its steady recovery, with international visitor numbers rising sharply in April 2026. Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said the figures demonstrate the sector's resilience and its ongoing contribution to the country's economy. According to Stats NZ, 288,500 international visitors arrived in New Zealand in April, an 8 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, bringing visitor numbers to 94 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

Strong Growth From Key Markets

Visitor arrivals from major markets showed notable gains. Australia led the numbers with 138,000 visitors, up 4 per cent, while the United States contributed 25,800 visitors, a 14 per cent increase. India also saw strong growth, sending 8,000 visitors, up 17 per cent compared with April 2025.

Visitor numbers from China surged to 32,500, reflecting a 52 per cent increase compared with the same period last year. Minister Upston highlighted this growth as especially significant given China's importance as a tourism market for New Zealand.

Tourism Supporting Jobs and Investment

Minister Upston said the figures are a sign that government support and sector-focused initiatives are helping New Zealand tourism thrive. "Tourism is a cornerstone of the Government's push for economic growth. This sustained growth is great news for Kiwis – it represents business investment, jobs, and incomes for New Zealanders, all while showing off our beautiful country."

She noted that targeted efforts, such as the visa-waiver trial for Chinese and Pacific travellers arriving via Australia, are helping to attract more international visitors and boost the sector's recovery.

Growth Amid Global Challenges

The minister acknowledged that international tourism growth is occurring even as the world faces challenges, including conflicts in the Middle East and associated pressures on fuel supply. She said the sector's strong performance demonstrates both resilience and careful planning.

"These latest figures show we are moving in the right direction," she said. "Growth doesn't happen by accident – it's the result of ensuring the right settings are in place to help the sector succeed."

With tourism remaining New Zealand's second-largest export earner, continued growth in visitor numbers is expected to support jobs, business investment, and broader economic activity, while allowing the country to showcase its natural beauty and vibrant culture to travellers from across the globe.
