The Gauteng provincial government has praised the thousands of runners who took part in the 99th Comrades Marathon, describing their performances as a powerful display of determination, discipline and human endurance.
Speaking after the race, Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile congratulated everyone who participated in the world-famous ultramarathon, from elite competitors to first-time runners who completed the demanding 85.7km route from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
Maile said every athlete who stood at the starting line and every participant who crossed the finish line deserved recognition for taking on one of the toughest endurance events in global sport. "The Comrades Marathon is much more than a race. It represents perseverance, sacrifice and the ability of people to push beyond their limits," he said.
The MEC reserved special praise for George Kusche, who claimed victory in the 2026 edition. Maile described the winning performance as an outstanding example of what can be achieved through dedication, preparation and belief in one's abilities. Beyond the competition itself, the marathon once again highlighted the unique ability of sport to bring people together. Thousands of runners from different races, cultures, languages and communities shared the same road, encouraging one another while pursuing a common goal.
According to Maile, this spirit of unity remains one of South Africa's greatest strengths and serves as a reminder of how sport can help strengthen social cohesion across the country. One of the most notable aspects of this year's event was the strong participation from Gauteng provincial government employees. Public servants from several departments joined the race, demonstrating their commitment to health, fitness and personal achievement.
The Gauteng Department of Education and the Gauteng Department of Health each had 42 participants in the marathon. The Department of Social Development was represented by 13 runners, while the e-Government Department had nine participants. Human Settlements, Roads and Transport, and Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation each entered four runners. The Office of the Premier and Provincial Treasury were represented by three participants each, while Community Safety and Economic Development had two runners each. Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Infrastructure Development and the Gauteng Liquor Board each had one participant.
Maile commended all the provincial employees who completed the race, saying they had made Gauteng proud through their commitment and resilience. He also encouraged more South Africans to embrace running and active lifestyles, noting that sport plays an important role in building healthier communities while promoting unity and social well-being.
The MEC further congratulated the Comrades Marathon Association for delivering another successful international event that attracted participants from across South Africa and around the world. With the historic 100th edition of the Comrades Marathon set to take place in 2027, Gauteng is already looking ahead. Maile expressed confidence that the province has the talent and determination needed to produce a future Comrades champion. As celebrations continue following the 2026 race, attention is beginning to shift towards next year's landmark event, which promises to mark a major milestone in the history of one of the world's most iconic endurance races.
