Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Tuesday inaugurated the Model Village Development Programme at Jagra village in Nalbari district and called for collective efforts to transform rural areas into centres of holistic and sustainable development.
Speaking on the occasion, Acharya said the real strength of an ideal village lies in the active participation of its people.
He stressed the need for educated youth, farmers, women's groups, voluntary organisations and panchayat representatives to work together for the all-round development of villages.
Acharya also underlined the importance of education, healthcare, agriculture, sanitation, women empowerment and environmental protection in building a model rural community.
Referring to Mahatma Gandhi's vision that 'India lives in its villages', the governor said rural development remains the foundation of nation-building.
He particularly emphasised the importance of scientific farming methods, organic agriculture, water conservation and the integration of modern technology with traditional agricultural knowledge to strengthen the state's rural economy.
Highlighting the role of youth and women in rural transformation, Acharya said digital literacy, agri-entrepreneurship, self-help groups and skill development would play a key role in making villages self-reliant and prosperous.
The governor also emphasised the importance of building a 'Nasha Mukt Bharat' and urged the people, especially the youths, to stay away from substance abuse and work towards creating a healthy and disciplined society.
Stressing the need for environmental conservation, he appealed to everyone to plant more trees and motivate others to actively participate in plantation drives for a greener and sustainable future.
