Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said a special agency would be appointed to conduct a detailed study on soil erosion along the beaches and rivers in the state. He was responding to a question tabled in the state Assembly by Congress MLA Luizinho Faleiro on the first day of the monsoon session.
Sawant said the Pune-based Central Water and Power Research Station earlier conducted a study on some stretches of beaches in South Goa district, where retaining walls were constructed to prevent soil erosion. "The state government will appoint a special agent as soon as possible to conduct a detailed study on soil erosion along the beaches and rivers, and construct the retaining walls wherever required," he said.
Earlier, raising the issue in the House, Faleiro said soil erosion near the beaches and riverfronts was a major environmental concern. He demanded that a permanent agency be appointed to conduct a study on it.
