A 19-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh has been arrested for allegedly torching three motorcycles at Kasarvadavali in the city, police said on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Tuesday, they said.
According to police, the accused, identified as Mohammad Sunovar Anwar Sayyed, who hailed from Gonda district of UP, committed the act in a drunken state and there was no serious motive behind it. "Sayyed had come to Thane in search of a job a day before the incident. Early Tuesday, he was moving around in Kasarvadavali area after getting drunk," senior inspector Kishore Khairnar said.
"He saw petrol leaking from a motorcycle, which was parked by the roadside. He threw a burning match stick towards it, due to which the vehicle caught fire. Two other motorcycles parked next to it also got completly destroyed in the blaze," he added. A police patrol team later spotted the accused moving around in a suspicious manner in the area and detained him.
During the questioning, he admitted to having torched the vehicles. He was later arrested and booked under IPC section 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage) and others.
