Shanghai makes the record for unveiling world’s first underground hotel InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland
China's Shanghai is now the destination for the world's first underground hotel buried almost 88 to 90 meters deep in an old quarry. The construction for this record-making underground hotel started 10 years back. Located in the Songjiang district, the investment involved in this project is gigantic, an average figure 2 billion yuan (or US $288 million).
"It's the first time to turn an abandoned quarry into a wonderful hotel beneath the ground," Martin Jochman, the British architect, who designed the hotel, said.
He further said to the press that this is such a unique opportunity that endows him and his team with some interesting ideas of reshaping the relationship between nature and city. Named as InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel, it will be made public on November 20.
The top floor will be located at ground level with a roof covered in greenery to attract the eyeballs of visitors and onlookers, while the rest of the hotel will be below ground. Having around over 300 rooms, the hotel comprises of restaurant and sports facilities including bungee jumping, rock climbing just to name a few. The company is also looking forward to build a shopping center on the site in 2019.
