According to statistics from the Committee to Protect Journalists, 2018 is called the worst year for journalists in the past three years. The reports state that 53 journalists lost their lives across the world.

New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists claim that 34 journalists were targeted for murder in reprisal for their work. Three of the media persons who died in 2018 were women and this year the figure is almost double in comparison to 2017.

The report noted that in 2018, journalists were either murdered, died in crossfire or died while carrying out a dangerous assignment. The war-riddled Afghanistan was singled out as the deadliest country because extremists have stepped up deliberate attacks on journalists. Afghanistan is closely followed by Syria and India, as reported by Daily Monitor.

The report further claimed that five journalists were killed in Africa in 2017 as Somalia has the highest level of impunity index in the world. One reporter was murdered in Somalia and another one in Central African Republic. The murder of Jamal Kashoggi still considered a high-profile murder. Committee to Protect Journalists already started compiling detailed records on the deaths of all the journalists in 1992.
