Amade Abubacar, a journalist who is arbitrarily detained in a Mozambican prison, is being subjected to ill-treatment and many other things such as keeping him in starvation with no medical treatment and family visits. Amnesty International has claimed that it has received credible reports on this subject.

Amade Abubacar, who works for the state-owned Comunitaria Nacedje de Macomia radio and television in northern Cabo Delgado province, has been detained since January 5 on charges of espionage. He reportedly documented deadly attacks by armed groups against the civilians in Cabo Delgado province. Amnesty International highly condemns the barbaric act against him and demands his immediate unconditional release.

"Allegations that Amade Abubacar is being ill-treated and denied medical treatment must be investigated thoroughly and transparently and all those suspected of criminal responsibility brought to book. Amade is languishing in jail for simply doing his job as a journalist, exposing the suffering wrought on civilians by deadly attacks in Cabo Delgado," Amnesty International's Regional Director for Southern Africa, Deprose Muchena opined.

"Mozambican authorities must either charge Amade with a recognizable criminal offence or release him immediately and unconditionally and allow him to continue to do his job without fear of reprisals. His continued detention is a mockery of media freedom in Mozambique," Muchena said, as revealed on Amnesty International.
