The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency has recently distributed food packages to hundreds of people in the form of Ramadan aid. Single mothers and the elderly in Kenya's Nakuru town benefitted from free Turkish food aid on Sunday.
The town is located on the floor of the Great Rift valley 161 kilometres from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The packages included rice, and Maize flour used to make Kenyan staple food called Ugali, beans and cooking oil among others.
The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has been assisting needy Kenyans during the holy month of Ramadan with food aid as different parts of Kenya are experiencing food shortages due to poor rainfall, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
In the last week also, TIKA took a similar step in distributing food packages to needy citizens in Kenya near the capital city as part of its efforts during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Needy people gathered at Biafra Mosque in Eastleigh area in Nairobi to receive the food aid. The packages included rice, flour, beans, cooking oil, salt, sugar and other food provisions.
According to TIKA's Nairobi Coordinator, Emre Yuksek, 15,000 people had benefitted from the food donations and 5,000 from Iftar (fast-breaking) programs that are running until the end of Ramadan. "During the month of Ramadan, the Turkish government and Turkish NGOs are helping our brothers and sisters in Kenya in different parts of the country, we have been implementing the food security program during Ramadan," Emre Yuksek said.
"We are assisting the disadvantaged populations both in rural and urban areas, in Nairobi, we are targeting urban poor living in the slums," he added. The aid came from Turkey's aid and development agencies to Kenya's different parts due to the food shortages as the result of poor rainfall.
Apart from Kenya, the Turkish agency also distributed Ramadan aid and offered iftar at Al Ahmad Mosque in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires in a joint effort with the Argentina Islamic Centre.
