Spain's conservative opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo on Friday failed to garner the simple parliamentary majority needed to make him prime minister, clearing the way for acting premier Pedro Sanchez to try and clinch a new term in office.

If Sanchez's efforts prove unsuccessful, there would likely be a repeat general election in January.

In his second and last investiture attempt in the 350-seat house, more legislators opposed than supported Feijoo.
