China's foreign ministry on Sunday accused U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken of sending a "seriously incorrect signal" to "Taiwan independence" separatists, after the top U.S. diplomat congratulated Taiwan's president-elect Lai Ching-te on his victory.

Blinken's remarks violate the U.S. promise that it would only maintain cultural, economic, and other non-official ties with Taiwan, and China has already made solemn representations with the U.S. side over the statement, the foreign ministry said in a statement published on its official website.
