Widespread violence between supporters of the TMC and the BJP over alleged electoral malpractices in strife-torn Sandeshkhali marred the final phase of Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal on Saturday, causing injuries to numerous individuals.
Despite the unrest, a voter turnout of 69.89% was recorded across the nine contested seats by 5 pm, with several areas witnessing sporadic instances of violence.
The Election Commission received 2,667 complaints until 4 pm, including allegations of EVM malfunctions and obstruction of polling agents. TMC, Congress, ISF, and BJP each filed multiple complaints concerning poll-related violence, voter intimidation, and assaults on agents. While the Election Commission acknowledged these incidents, it maintained that the polling remained largely peaceful.
