A JD(U) party leader was brutally murdered in Nalanda district, Bihar, in the early hours of Monday, police reported.

The incident occurred around 4.30 am in Maua village when Anil Kumar, 62, stepped out for his morning walk. He had previously served as a polling agent during the June 1 elections.

Unidentified armed men ambushed him, assaulting and stabbing him, authorities confirmed. Kumar was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to the district government hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

District Magistrate Shashank Shubhankar confirmed that the police promptly reached the scene, launching an investigation and arranging for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of the incident. A case has been filed, and efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators.

Local tensions escalated further as clashes between JD(U) supporters and opposition members were reported on polling day. Senior JD(U) leader and state rural development minister, Shrawan Kumar, publicly condemned the murder, attributing the violence to opposition parties such as RJD and CPI(ML) Liberation.

Kumar has held his legislative seat in Nalanda since 1995, and JD(U) MP Kaushlendra Kumar is vying for his fourth consecutive term. The political rivalry is intense, with CPI(ML) Liberation's Sandeep Saurav posing a significant challenge.
