In a high-stakes political drama, Maharashtra gears up for vote counting in its 48 Lok Sabha seats on Tuesday. The counting will commence at 8 am across the state, utilizing 289 counting halls and 4,309 counting tables, operated by 14,507 personnel under tight police security, according to the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
The outcome holds significant importance for both the ruling Mahayuti and opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Maharashtra sends the second-highest number of members to the Lok Sabha, only behind Uttar Pradesh. The ruling coalition comprises the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, BJP, and the faction of the NCP under Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. In contrast, the MVA consists of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP).
With a voter turnout of 61.33 percent in the five-phase elections held at 98,140 polling stations, the political landscape sees figures like Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goyal, and Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule facing fierce contests. Notably, the BJP-led NDA aims to significantly boost their existing tally, setting a target of 45 plus constituencies out of Maharashtra's 48, amid a changed political climate post split within the Shiv Sena and NCP.
